Building Indicators

Select Build Indicator for a new MQL5 chart study. Explain the calculation first and then its appearance. A line, signal arrow and alert are separate parts of the specification; describing only the display can leave the signal logic open to interpretation.

Include the chart window, default inputs and timeframe assumptions. If an EA will read the indicator, describe its buffer values, including what represents a signal and what is returned when no signal exists. A visible drawing does not automatically provide an output an EA can read.

Define calculations and confirmation

Describe the price series and bars used. For a crossover arrow, specify completed-bar comparisons and the candle where the arrow appears. For a swing detector, explain the bars needed on each side and whether an unconfirmed marker can move as new data arrives.

Give concrete examples of expected behaviour. State whether the current candle can change and whether completed historical signals must remain fixed. “No repainting” alone is too vague for a calculation that waits for future bars to confirm a turning point. Explain when the information becomes available.

Layout and alerts

A screenshot helps with placement, colours and line styles. Attach it with a supported model and describe the important elements. It is a visual reference rather than the original calculation or source of a commercial indicator. Image Uploads explains formats and limits.

Specify the alert types and frequency. Every tick, once per bar and once per confirmed signal produce different experiences. Include any required message, symbol or timeframe information and ensure the alert rules agree with the plot's confirmation timing.

Check the result on a chart

Download the complete file, compile it and attach it to the intended chart. Compare values and signal bars with your examples. Change timeframe, reload the indicator and inspect old bars as well as recent output to check consistency.

If an EA uses buffers, test those values separately from the drawing. Keep a tested baseline before requesting display changes, and use Existing Indicators for later modifications to the MQL5 source.
